Work begins again

November 23, 2008

I realize it has been a long time since I've updated the map. It wasn't that I had real life issues, nor a lack of time to invest in it. It was basically due to me being bored of the mapmaking process for some finite amount of time. I also was semi-addicted to Travian. I think they put crack in the web responses! I've loaded up the Experience TD map back up and am diving right in. It really is amazing how one can pick up the project 11 months later and have almost no trouble at all getting waste deep involved in the process of adding new features, fixing bugs, or planning. This time around I am not failing miserably though. I've created a backlog with a list of "things" that will need to be done before the release of Experience TD. There are priorities, time estimations, even descriptions. This will help me prioritize tasks that are important rather than "cool". So the first thing I worked on was creating a near automated build process. What does that mean exactly? Well, I work on my map, I save my map, I double click this Build.bat file, and voila, it automatically creates a debug version and a release version of the map, sends it to the Widgetizer/Optimizer, and deploys it to my Wc3 folder. If that wasn't cool enough I now have an automatic build number generator involved in the process which updates (increases by 1) the version number of the map. The current version number is 2.0.1.1054 for example. The next will be 8.0.1.1055, then 2.0.1.1056, etc. The key here is MajorVersion.MinorVersion.SprintNumber.BuildNumber. Every time a public alpha/beta test comes out, I'll increase the SprintNumber by 1. Every time a major feature or set of major features is added I'll increase the MinorVersion by 1. Every time the map basically gets a complete overhaul, I'll increase the MajorVersion by 1. Cool eh? And all this is done without the use of Blizzard's Wc3 Editor.
